A Dedication to the Founder
Joe Carr, our 2011 race director for Blazing Sun Run ~ Run for Freedom, has passed the torch. On October 5, 2011, Joe Carr unexpectedly passed away, and left this world with a large hole in its heart. He created an enormous legacy and one which will never be the same. To honor Joe’s efforts, we want to continue the Blazing Sun Run ~ Run for Freedom in a way that would make Joe proud.
For the 1st Annual Blazing Sun ~ Run for Freedom, Joe’s efforts resulted in more than $40,000 being raised for The Hugs Project, a 501©3 organization started in June of 2004 in Oklahoma by Ray and Karen Stark. This dedicated, 100% volunteer group sends care packages full of canned food, hygiene items and various handmade gifts to military service men and women serving abroad.
We thank you, Joe Carr. You always put forth an amazing effort and tireless dedication. You will be missed.
About the Event
Blazing Sun Run is a 5K and 10K run/walk at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at Stars and Stripes Park. The proceeds from this race will benefit The Hugs Project who support deployed troops.
There will also be a 1K fun run/walk for children who'll have an opportunity to complete a "mission" with some active duty & retired Military personnel wearing "battle rattle". They will recite the pledge of allegiance under a large American flag before striking off on their hike.
We will ask them to have our troops' backs. This means they may need to help soldiers stay on course, make sure they drink lots of water to stay hydrated, encourage them or even carry gear. They might even have a little "adventure". They will never look at a man or woman in uniform in the same way again.
